The mare that you wish to breed and obtain the foal from (donor mare) is taken to the stallion of your choice and bred just as any other mare. The only difference in an ET setting as compared to the normal breeding process is the mare will be examined more often as ovulation approaches to fine-tune the day of its occurrence. Once ovulation is detected a day will be scheduled to perform the embryo recovery (flush), which will be 6 to 10 days after ovulation, generally day 8 or 9.
 
The Embryo Recovery
One or more liters of a modified salt solution are introduced into the mare's uterus, one liter at a time. This solution is recovered and passed through a filter capable of capturing an unfertilized ovum (egg) therefore; there is no chance that an embryo will escape. The retained solution is then examined for the presence of an embryo. Immediately after recovery the embryo is either transferred into a recipient mare on site or packaged for transport.
 
Following the flush procedure a prostaglandin product should be given to the donor mare to insure that the mare will come back into heat. If no embryo is recovered, this will shorten the time frame for the next embryo recovery attempt.
 
If transported, the embryo is transferred into a qualified recipient mare that best matches day of cycle of your donor mare.
 
After the transfer of the embryo and with the use of ultrasound equipment we can determine if the transfer has been successful, typically at the time the embryo is ten to fourteen days old.
 
The embryo recovery rate will vary, higher for the young mares and lower for the older sub fertile mare, but should approximate the per heat cycle conception rate of the stallion that the mare is being bred to.
